Overwhelming Poverty, but Inspiring Spirit

From NATIVITY:NIGERIA Team in Jos (including information from Abuja):

It is August 4, 2009 12:06:19 GMT+01:00 in Jos, Nigeria. Rob Douglas and Marina here, reporting on our day. Today we went and visited Hwol Yarje and farms. It is a couple of miles off the main road, and we saw the facilities there. A patient donated some land out there, and when the staff went to see it, they saw many children running about, with no access to school, so they got the local church to allow them to use some land for a temporary school. Last year the Naval academy built a temporary structure to house over 200 students from the surrounding farms. But the community has donated land - about a football field size plot on which to build a permanent school. The possibilities are endless. They can build many nice facilities that will really make an impact on an under-served community.

We also went to visit a state run orphanage where Faith Alive serves by providing some checkups and care. We saw the very young kids there, and they are all lovely, amazing. It was very difficult to go for such a short visit - your heart connects with them instantly, and leaves a hole when you have to leave all too soon.

As we drove back, we also saw the markets of Jos, busy with so many people buying food of all colors and textures - such freshness. We saw streams, where people washed clothes, and food, and walked across. The poverty is overwhelming, but the happy spirit is inspiring.

We will add photos later, when we have a chance to upload them.

We have heard from the Anawim team. All is well. They are leaving for Kaduna tomorrow, where they will work on projects for Sister Oresoa - painting, and maintenance. We will try to get more info from them, but communication is more difficult.

Peace and blessing on you all. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.

Rob Douglas, Marina, & Ed.

Rob, what an incredible journey you and the Nativity:Nigeria are on! With every step you take, know that the Lord has walked there before you and that today you follow in His footprints. He'll always show you the way. Peace and blessings Brother.
